Scottish roundup: Morelos scores double in Rangers victory over St Mirren | Scottish Premiership

Rangers scored three late goals to shrug off St Mirren in an eventful 5-2 Premiership win at Ibrox.

Buddies’ keeper, Trevor Carson, saved a James Tavernier penalty after five minutes, but the Rangers captain set up Todd Cantwell to open the scoring in the 26th minute only for the Saints midfielder Mark O’Hara to volley in a terrific equaliser in first-half added time. Fashion Sakala restored the Rangers lead soon after the break with a header but O’Hara again equalised in the 65th minute with a strike from the edge of the box.

But with 10 minutes remaining Alfredo Morelos scored from close range before a fine finish moments later made it 4-2, with the substitute Scott Arfield adding a fifth in the 86th minute, although Michael Beale may have some concerns about his side’s defending.

Dundee United moved off the foot of the table after a 2-1 comeback win at Fir Park. Kevin van Veen’s first-half goal had Motherwell ahead at half-time but Jim Goodwin’s side struck twice in nine minutes through Ilmari Niskanen and Jamie McGrath’s penalty to win.

Livingston kept their hopes of a top-six finish alive with a 2-0 victory over St Johnstone.

First-half goals from Joel Nouble and Steven Kelly, with a stunning free-kick, handed Livi only their second win from eight matches. The result leaves seventh-place Livingston one and two points adrift of Hibernian and St Mirren respectively before the final pre-split fixture next weekend.

Kevin Nisbet scored a second-half winner as spirited Hibernian ended Hearts’ nine-match unbeaten Edinburgh derby run. Hibs – who had not previously defeated their city rivals since December 2019 – enjoyed the majority of the chances and eventually found a way through in the 67th minute.

The victory moved Hibs – who had lost their previous four matches – within two points of the beleaguered Jambos, who crashed to a sixth consecutive defeat in all competitions in their first match under the charge of caretaker manager, Steven Naismith.
