The UK government’s plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda was dealt a serious blow on Wednesday after judges in the supreme court unanimously upheld an appeal court ruling that found it to be unlawful.
As the Guardian’s deputy political editor, Peter Walker, tells Nosheen Iqbal, the judges found there was a real risk of deported refugees having their claims in the east African country wrongly assessed or being returned to their country of origin to face persecution.
It has further fanned the flames of a political firestorm in the Conservative party, with some MPs urging the prime minister to ignore the ruling and get “planes in the air”, and others urging him to abandon the plan entirely and come up with new ways to “stop the boats”.
