It’s supposed to be the mellow season, where we seek out the cosy and comforting. But this autumn, culture seems to have got a bit – well, steamy. The Guardian’s film editor, Catherine Shoard, explains why some surprisingly sexy films will be hitting the big screens near you. While the Guardian music critic Alexis Petridis guides us through what’s fresh and exciting. And if you are endlessly scrolling through streaming and TV options, critic Leila Latif is on hand to take control of your remote.
Nosheen Iqbal hears about the new films with old favourites – from Glenda Jackson’s final role in The Great Escaper to Ridley’s Scott’s Napoleon and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. But also a return of the erotic thriller in Fair Play and a post-#MeToo take on the genre, The Royal Hotel.
There is also a return of big-name big-reputation acts in music, with Madonna on tour and the Rolling Stones’ new album – and even music from beyond the grave from Prince. But there are plenty of young contenders too, with soulful trio Say She She, folk band Lankum and a drum and bass track from Sipho.
In television, Leila has high hopes for the current series of The Great British Bake Off and is eagerly awaiting the TV serialisation of the film Boiling Point. She says something surprising is going on in the latest season of The Real Housewives of Beverley Hills. Plus there is the rise of rightwing pop and the joys of the latest Chicken Run film to look forward to.
