Inspired by the popular Oddly Satisfying subreddit, the auction will include artwork by Anyma, Beeple and Luis Ponce.
Sotheby’s, one of the world’s most prestigious auction houses, has announced that it will auction off a collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) inspired by the “strangely satisfying” content found on the social media platform Reddit. The auction was held on the basis of the blockchain platform Decentraland , which allows users to create virtual environments and interact with them.
The Natively Digital: Oddly Satisfying auction will feature a lot of digital art inspired by the oddly satisfying web videos that were popular on the oddly satisfying subreddit in 2013. The community shares strange and fascinating video loops, such as hypnotic animations of patterns and movements that make no sense.
The auction will feature 66 NFT works, such as works by renowned NFT artist Mike “Beeple” Winkelman, whose $69.3 million Christie’s NFT auction broke the all-time NFT record two years ago this week. Other artists participating in the auction are Clement Moren, ARC, Ryan Talbot and Lucas Zanotto.
Sotheby’s “Natively Digital” auction is the first NFT auction to be held in the metaverse, hosted by RLTY World, a private platform used by brands and communities on the Web3
Sotheby’s head of digital art and irreplaceable tokens, Michael Buanna, described the sale as “a look at the pervasive influence of digital culture, which will continue to shape our lives”.
“One of the recurring themes is how digital art conveys our ever-evolving relationship with technology,” he explained in a statement, “from the therapeutic and escapist pleasures of strangely immersive animations to the entanglements of technology that seems to encroach on what it means to be human in Glitch Art.”
