It’s official, the hoodie is this season’s most fashionable (and comfortable) staple. Like its activewear counterparts – the backpack, puffer jacket and hiking boot – fashion’s love of a staple in a luxury fabric with a price tag to match continues. Miuccia Prada put it centre stage in her AW23 Miu Miu collection (left), the hero piece in grey marl poking beneath a wool coat. Styled with leggings, it gave a fresh-from-the-gym yet business-ready look. Other versions came in leather.
It’s an easy look to recreate on a budget. Arket’s scuba zip-up (4, above) is a dead ringer for the catwalk version. Wear it layered over a white or striped shirt styled with a pencil skirt and boots for the office. Your easiest entry-point hoodie-look is layered under a boxy blazer or an oversized wool coat – with jeans or your workout leggings and trainers. Varsity hoodies are never not in fashion and preppy brands like Polo Ralph Lauren and Rowing Blazers always have great colour combos. A trawl of vintage websites will yield a good find.
Gant’s New York is a unisex classic (5), especially styled with a camel coat – or channel Vetements with Weekday’s Metallica-style typography (2). Make your look extra cosy by adding a knitted hoodie over a rollneck – H&M’s beige version (£29.99), or Marks & Spencer’s Borg half-zip made using recycled fabric (£35) – worn with a slip dress and boots. For a luxurious take try Me and Em’s cashmere boxy fit or sleeveless style over a shirt and under a blazer or coat. The high street has a dizzying array of hoodies, but pick a weighty fabric to create the polished runway-ready look.
